Ridley Scott returns to the Colosseum with Gladiator II, a film that follows Lucius, the nephew of the original film’s protagonist Maximus. Fans of the original will be excited to know that production took place across some of the most visually stunning historical locations, from the deserts of Morocco to the fortress-like landscapes of Malta. A fully functional replica of the Roman Colosseum was constructed in Malta, towering at 52 feet, for the movie’s epic combat scenes. The production even made news for a public event in Malta where fans got an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the grand sets, which will remain as tourist attractions.

Actors like Paul Mescal (as Lucius) and Pedro Pascal (as the villainous General Marcus Acacius) have undergone intense physical training, echoing the transformative dedication that Russell Crowe brought to the original film. Filming was a monumental endeavor, involving 30,000 pieces of armor and over 10,000 costumes. And yes, Ridley Scott’s dedication to historical accuracy is unmatched—expect jaw-dropping gladiatorial battles staged with a combination of old-school choreography and cutting-edge CGI enhancements.
